Wrestlemania Documentaries Wishlist
Ahead of Wrestlemania this weekend, Peacock released a documentary covering Wrestlemania IX. Even though us as fans knew some of the behind the scenes situations with this Mania. Like Hogan politicing his way into the main event and championship win. There was so much about that year's event we did not know.
For some reason the WWF had the foresight to record BTS footage for future use. So the wheels started in my head about other Mania's that would be good documentary topics. Now these ones have been talked about here and there in different docs, but no documentaries soley dedicated to it that I can recall. So with that here are 5 Wrestlemanias I wouldn't mind seeing a documentary about.
Wrestlemania 27
Wrestlemania 27 was the first Wrestlemania I attended live. I had a blast that entire weekend and enjoyed the show, in hindsight though the show was one of the weaker Manias.
However it is perfect fodder for a documentary. We had The Rock returning to the WWE after 7 years, with a little feud brewing against John Cena. Shawn Michaels was inducted into the hall of fame, a year after losing a retirement match against The Undertaker. The Undertaker and Triple H damn near took each other out. It was the card that hosted Edge's last match for 9 years.
The dud between Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler would have to be addressed too. All good material for a documentary.
Wrestlemania 20
Wrestlemania 20 held from Madison Square Garden. Opened with a intro by Shane and Vince McMahon with Shane's son, newborn Declan included in the promo. With the discussion being legacy it made sense but was over the top.
With the previous three Manias held in stadiums, it was considered special they returned to the Garden for this anniversary show. It featured a match between Chris Jericho and Christian, which ended with Trish Stratus turning heel.
Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar in a match that both were leaving wwe afterwards. The fans let them have it. The Rock wrestled his last Mania match for 8 years in a tag match with Mick Foley against Evolution. Of course Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit won their respective championship matches.
Benoit's involvement makes this one tricky to do a full documentary on. I however would like to see a full doc dedicated to the event.
Wrestlemania 11
The card itself was meh, but the hype around the event was top notch. Lawrence Taylor fresh off retiring from the NFL, was stepping into the ring against one of the best most agile big men ever in Bam Bam Bigelow. Salt 'N Pepa performed Whatta Man ahead of LT's entrance.
The media coverage for LT's participation, almost made the WWF mainstream, but they still had their haters.
Shawn Michaels and Diesel faced off for the WWF championship. Bringing Jenny Mccarthy and Pamela Anderson two 90's "IT" girls to the ring respectively. Jeff Jarrett and Razor Ramon fought in a Intercontinental championship match.
This card was another spectacle due to Lawrence Taylor's participation, and I'm sure there's plenty of behind the scenes footage of how everything came together.
Wrestlemania X
If the WWF had the bright idea to record behind the scenes stuff for Mania IX. I know they had to follow it up the next year for the 10th anniversary of Wrestlemania. So it's time to pull that footage out the vault, I just can't see them not having any.
Held at Madison Square Garden, Wrestlemania X is famous for the classic Bret Hart vs Owen Hart match. The legendary trend setting ladder match between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon. Which their match running over, caused a ten man tag match to be canceled. Later in the card Bret Hart defeated Yokozuna to get his revenge from the previous year and win the WWF championship.
Macho Man Randy Savage wrestled his last televisied WWF match on this card. Celebrities such as Burt Reynolds, Jennie Garth, Rhonda Shear, and Donnie Wahlberg made appearances on the card.
