Top 5 WWE Films
I recently finished former WWE writer Brian Gerwitz's book There's Just One Problem.. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to any wrestling fan who enjoys reading about the behind of the scenes of the machine.
In the book, Brian mentions he wrote a script for WWE films, a Pee-Wees Big Adventure style origin movie featuring Eugene. The brass passed on it, but I thought that was a brilliant idea. So it got me thinking what are the best WWE films out.
Now by no means will any WWE film ever win a Oscar and most are B-movie quality, but they have produced some genuinely entertaining movies. Here's the top 5 WWE movies in my opinion.
Note: I excluded The Rundown since that was more of a Hollywood film that WWE had a part in strictly for legal reasons since The Rock was the star. I also excluded films like The Call and Oculus from this. I enjoyed those films but this list covers films where WWE wrestlers were the main stars.
5. The Marine 3: Home Front
The Marine franchise is probably WWE films most well known film franchise. It started in 2006 as a vehicle for John Cena. The movie's not terrible but it's not great. They followed up with a film starring Ted Dibiase Jr. and that was horrible.
In comes The Miz for the third film and while he starred in 3 more Marine moves, this one is the absolute best of the entire franchise.
Released in 2013 it follows The Miz's character Jake Carter home from duty who must save the day when a organization led by Neal McDonough wreck havoc on the town.
It has good action, the best villain in the franchise thanks to Neal who chews his sceneary, and a believable story.
4. That's What I Am
Released in 2011, That's What I Am starred Ed Harris with a small role by Randy Orton. Set in the 1960's the gist of the film follows a young boy being paired for a school project with the class weirdo, freak whatever you want to call him.
The two become friends and learn to overcome some issues that come with growing up. It's actually a decent movie but one you've seen before. It has wonder years vibes written all over it with it's tone and presentation.
3. The Condemned
If you've never seen The Condemned, think Running Man meets The Hunger Games. Stone Cold Steve Austin stars in the film with a bit part by fellow WWE alum Nathan Jones.
It follows a group of convicts forced to fight one another in a game broadcast over the internet. The winner gets their freedom and some cash as well.
The movie will never be in the conversation as a top action film. It has some decent action and Stone Cold definitely has a presence in the film on how he carries the movie. If you're looking for a mindless action movie, The Condemned is for you.
A sequel was released in 2015 starring Randy Orton and it's still on my watchlist.
2. Legendary
This 2010 film dramedy starred John Cena with some support from Danny Glover and Patricia Clarkson. Cena is the older brother of Cal played by Devon Graye. Cal is a bookworm/nerd whatever you want to call him who decides to join the school wrestling team.
What better teacher than his older brother Mike (Cena)? Mike has been estranged from the family since their father passed, but wrestling brings the two brothers together.
In the process Cal gains self-esteem and his brother back. Watching this I genuinely was invested in the characters and was rooting for Cal during his matches.
Legendary is currently available on Pluto
1. See No Evil
During Spooky season this movie holds up against any Halloween movie out there...that is not a classic. Released in 2006 May 19th to be exact. The film stars Kane as a psychopath named Jacob Goodnight.
Goodnight minds his business in a run down hotel, until some teenagers on duty for their community service pay the hotel a visit to spruce it up. Needless to say Jacob doesn't care for his new visitors.
See No Evil has an decent backstory for the Goodnight character. It has the killings and gore thats needed in an horror movie. Overall its just a damn good movie, the follow up 8 years later is just as good in my opinion.
See No Evil is available to watch on Tubi
