Spooky Themed Gimmick Matches

It's spooky season and Halloween is everywhere. Retail Stores, TV, music, you name it and something is inspired by Halloween. That translates to the world of wrestling, where fans love the classic WCW now NXT reborn Halloween Havoc event. Along with wrestlers who embraced the dark and spooky side of things Vampiro, Kane, Abyss, Bray Wyatt, Rosemary, Su Yung, and of course The Undertaker among many others.

In honor of spooky season and it's influence in wrestling. I cover 5 gimmick matches with spooky themes in this article.

5. Clockwork Orange House Of Fun Match

Originated by ECW legend Raven during his time in TNA, The Clockwork Orange House of Fun Match is really an elevated hardcore match. With the weapons being readily available for competitors by hanging from chains surrounding the ring, or in the event of a cage match. The Cage.

Notable Clockwork Orange House of Fun matches are

Raven vs Sandman May 5th, 2003 NWA-TNA PPV #36

Raven, Robert Roode & James Storm vs Kaz, Rhino, & Chris Harris August 9th, 2007 Impact

Moose vs Sami Callihan July 1st, 2022 Against All Odds

4. Doomsday Chamber Of Blood Match

This TNA creation from the mind of one Abyss, kind of became his signature match type in TNA. The match featured a steel cage with Barb Wire on top of the cage. Weapons were allowed and the winner was the first one to make his opponent bleed and then got the pinfall. A tad convoluted when you think about it, but that was TNA at the time.

Only two instances of this match occurred, the first was in 2007 at Hard Justice, and featured Abyss, Sting, and Andrew Martin (Test) vs The Christian Coalition (Christian Cage, AJ Styles, and Tomko). The next one was at Lockdown in 2009 and featured Abyss vs Matt Morgan.

3. Chamber Of Horrors Match

This infamous match held at Halloween Havoc '91 in Chattanooga, TN may have been ambitious if not well thought out. The match featured a large steel chains with weapons inside, and in the middle of the chamber a chair. Not just any chair, one a opponent must be placed into and "electrocuted" to win the match.

Roster members like the Steiner Brothers, Abdullah The Butcher, Sting, Cactus Jack, Vader, and Scott Hall participated in this match. With Abdullah the lucky contestant to sit in the chair.

2. Buried Alive

A match tailor made for The Undertaker. This match was a no holds barred match with the winner throwing his opponent into the "ground" throwing dirt on them to bury them alive.

The first time this match occurred was in 1996 to cap off a feud between The Undertaker's and Mankind. The In Your House event that hosted the match was even called Buried Alive. The match was pretty popular up til the mid-2000's. As the Undertaker became a special attraction and wrestled very infrequently the match disappeared last occurring in 2010.

Besides the inaugural match between Undertaker and Mankind. Other notable matches include

The Undertaker vs Stone Cold Steve Austin December 13, 1998 In Your House: Rock Bottom

The Undertaker & Big Show vs Rock n Sock Connection September 9, 1999 Smackdown

The Undertaker vs Kane October 24, 2010 Bragging Rights

1. Casket Match

Another gimmick match born out of The Undertaker's gimmick and probably the one most associated with him. The casket match also known as coffin or last rites match. The object of this match is throw your opponent into the casket and shut the lid. Simple enough right?

Well the match was a favorite of The Undertaker's. Other promotions like WCW, TNA, AEW, and Lucha Underground have had matches with their own spin on it.

The first casket match was Undertaker vs Kamala at Survivor Series in 1992. The last casket match with The Undertaker was in 2018 against Rusev at The Greatest Royal Rumble
