5 Of The Best Female Gimmicks
Timeless Toni Storm has been gracing our airwaves since the fall of 2023. A throwback gimmick to the Hollywood Glamour actresses, Toni Storm has given her all to this character. Fans have been spilt between loving or hating the act, and I for one love it.
The Timeless act got the pinwheels in my brain moving, about other female gimmicks. More importantly gimmicks that either were not common or the performer gave it their all. With that here are 5 of the best female gimmicks.
Jillian Hall
Jillian Hall won't go down in the wrestling history books as one of the greats, either in ring or as a manager. She however was reliable as a performer and had a timely great gimmick. In 2007 she took on the role of a singer in the WWE.
Aspiring to be a pop star she would sing to audiences. One major problems, she was very tone deaf and her singing was horrible. Yet, ever chance she got she tried to sing. She even did a impromptu audition for music producer Timbaland. Jillian gave her all in this gimmick and made some genuinely entertaining moments.
Madison Rayne
When Madison Rayne debuted in TNA in 2009 she was paired with The Beautiful People. That time under Angelina Love and Velvet Sky, helped her become a more well rounded character and wrestler. When she separated from The Beautiful People and branched out on her own in 2011, she stole the show.
Becoming the Killer Queen of TNA, she played a Queen B Karen type with TNA as her playground. Pompous and poised, yet conniving she would do anything possible to maintain the title of Queen B of TNA. Complete with a tiara, sash and one of the best yet underrated TNA themes ever. Madison Rayne really embodied that role.
ODB
OK, this one maybe a little unfair because ODB actually is her gimmick in real life. The on-screen character was just a cranked up version of her. Debuting in TNA in 2008 One Dirty Bitch (ODB) was an anomaly in the world of the Knockouts division. She was a trailer park living, whiskey sipping, tough gal.
She could throw hands with the best of them. Not afraid to face off against men, and loved grabbing her breasts. She was authentic which makes the character one of the greatest gimmicks ever.
Laurel Van Ness
Before she was our favorite WWE United States Women's champion, Chelsea Green was turning head's in Impact wrestling. Looking back I'm disappointed I did not see the greatness in her back then. In 2016 Chelsea debuted in Impact Wrestling as Laurel Van Ness leading a new generation of the Knockouts roster. She entered into a on-screen relationship with Braxton Sutter and that's when the magic happened.
After Sutter ruined their wedding professing his love for Allie. Laurel became an unhinged scorned lover a "Hot Mess". She would wear her wedding dress now ruined, complete with very all over the place makeup, walking around barefoot and a trusty wine bottle always in hand. In this gimmick Chelsea gave us early glimpses into her comedic timing, and her ability and willingness to go all in with a character. It actually was one of the more unique gimmicks during that era.
Su Yung
What The Undertaker is to supernatural gimmicks in men's wrestling, in my opinion that is what Su Yung has done for female wrestling supernatural gimmicks. Su Yung fully embraces and embodies that role, giving the character a true life of its own.
From the undead brides to the undead realm. The makeup, the body language. Even holding a "funeral" for Rosemary and setting the coffin on fire. Su Yung just oozes creepy and genuinely may have some fans unnerved when she's on the screen. Which makes her act one of the best female gimmicks in pro wrestling ever.
