Tian Sha What Could Have Been
In December of 2020 a mysterious person started appearing in NXT via vignettes. She resembled an ancient Asian ghoul or mythical figure and no one was sure what was going on. She would sit on a throne at the top of the ramp barely making any movements.
This figure known as Mei Ying, portrayed by Karen Q who later was repackaged as Wendy Choo. Rarely spoke, sprayed mist, laid down a death grip and went about her day. Alongside her were Boa and Xia Li (Lei Ying Lee in TNA). They summoned her to NXT to assist them and the trio became known as Tian Sha.
Then there's pretty much where things sputtered for the group. Other than a feud with Mercedes Martinez, the trio didnt amount too much. And they never had a clear directive for why they were in NXT. Which is a shame because they had potential to really be something in NXT.
When I first saw the vignettes and Mei Ying character, the whole thing gave me Big Trouble In Little China vibes. Yet, WWE didn't capitalize on that inspiration. Mei Ying should have been a combination of spooky with a touch of possible mysticism. Just enough to build that aura around her. Add in some mythology around Mei Ying, Tian Sha, and what everything means to them.
Yet other than the vignettes nothing was really done with the group. And by April of 2021 the group was disbanded. Sadly the same scenario happened to Wyatt Sicks, after an impressive debut they flounder. Which means the promotion just no longer knows, what to do with those type of characters.
It's really a tradegy because the gimmick and faction, could have been so much more. If done right the group may have still been together to this day. Or at least have an actual legacy. Man, what could have been
