Last night at Wrestlemania night 2, John Cena defeated Cody Rhodes to become a 17 time World Champion. Breaking the record of one "Nature Boy" Ric Flair. While I could have done without the messiness of the win, thanks to Travis Scott's involvement. The Right man won the championship.
Not only because Cena is a legend who deserves all his flowers on the way out. Also because for the story, whatever they maybe trying to tell..it makes sense. Since the initial shock of a heel Cena has worn off, his retirement tour would not be the same without a purpose. Sure he could have hopped from feud to feud until his run was up, but fans would easily get bored with that.
Now he can pull a Brock Lesnar and hold the championship hostage. Appearing on WWE programming at his leisure and making quick work of his future opponents. While still leaving breadcrumbs of questions pertaining to his alliance with The Rock, until it's time for that story to be told. Then when the time is right he may revert back to a face as his run winds down. Perfect fodder to keep people tuned in.
On the other side of the coin, we can all admit Cody's year long reign was rather lackluster. Not all his fault though, for all the heart, soul, and charisma Cody puts into his performance. Other factors played a part into the mediocrity of it. First Cody was a prime example of the chase being better than the win.
Once "the story" was finished and he reached the apex at Mania last year, the high everyone experienced started dying down. Then none of his feuds as champion were memorable. He battled against AJ Styles, Logan Paul, Solo Sikoa, and Kevin Owens. His feud with KO was probably the most compelling. Yet he often played second fiddle to the Bloodline angle as it was nearing it's conclusion. And then once his feud with Cena started, he was floating around until Cena's schedule opened up to appear on WWE TV.
It also seemed either fans were growing tired of Cody, or he lost his "edge". Now he has a chance to reset his persona, maybe step away for a month or so. Then come back to get his championship from Cena and maybe turn heel in the process.
In the grand scheme of things, Cena winning was best for business. We shall see how things play out in the coming months.
