HindSight Edition-Goldberg's Streak

In 1998 Goldberg set the wrestling world on fire with his undeafeated streak of 173-0, quickly rising up the ranks and becoming a major player within WCW and soon the entire world of professional wrestling. In his recent WWE network documentary, he talks about the streak and the things WCW did to give the streak more credence and to build his character, like his entrance flanked by officers and security guards. The documentary also touched on what I think is still a hot topic, the streak being broken.

Goldberg and Kevin Nash faced off at 1998's Starrcade for the WCW Heavyweight Championship, in which after interference Nash defeated Goldberg to break the streak and win the championship. Watching the documentary I asked myself, and later asked social media should the streak have been broken? Initially I believed it should not have been broken, so I went back and watched the match.

The match itself is not a bad match, it had a big fight feel to it although neither Goldberg or Nash are known for being the most technicial wrestlers but they had their respective styles and knew how to make it work. Both participants in the documentary allude to how cluster the match ended up being, there was interference from Disco Inferno, Bam Bam Bigelow, and then Scott Hall with the cattle prod that took Goldberg out. A year removed from the Montreal Screwjob and both WWE (F at the time) and WCW were using any excuse to have a screwjob type finish in high profile matches.

We all know the whole purpose of this angle was to allow Hogan to come back and the nWo to reunite as one, but Goldberg's aura and prescence took a hit after the streak was broken. He was still kicking ass and winning matches but he didn't look anywhere as invincible as he once did.

In hindsight Goldberg's streak should have went to at least 200 wins before being broke. If WCW decided that it had to be broken before, looking at the roster around that time Kevin Nash probably was the best guy to break it, followed by DDP in my opinion. Since we're on my opinion, honestly the streak should not have been broken at the time, and honestly probably not until WCW went out of business. It was a reason to draw people in and keep them tuned in, wonder who's next? or is he next? WCW mishandled that storyline, but if they hadn't, I wouldnt be able to talk about it today.

Thanks for reading, Have a Happy New Year!
