Hindsight Edition: Wrestlemania 27, I Was There

Today is the 10 year anniversary of Wrestlemania 27, the event that bought The Rock back to the WWE as the host of the show, after 7 years away making a name for himself in Hollywood. Wrestlemania 27 was also my first Wrestlemania Weekend and it was a great weekend.

I attended my first WWE Axxess which was alot to take in, and has only grown in size and scope since then. It was my second time in Atlanta but my first as an adult so I got to experience the city and visit some landmarks. I loved being around other people who enjoy and love wrestling as much as me. It definitely was one of the best weekends of my life.

Now on to the event itself - sitting in the Georgia Dome I was still in awe that it was my first mania and I took it all in. I witnessed what would be Edge's last match for nine years and The Rock electrify the crowd like only he can. Triple H and Undertaker told a dramatic story of a man trying to avenge his friend and a man trying to keep his streak alive.

There were a couple of servicable matches. My favorite persona of Cody Rhodes disfigured Cody, took on Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton fought CM Punk a few months before his infamous pipe bomb since his stock skyhigh. Other than that, the event was actually horrible and unmemorable.

John Cena vs The Miz was nothing more than a setup for The Rock and Cena to meet at the following years Mania and it seemed no one not even the WWE cared about the match itself.  Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler was abysmal and a waste of a spot on the card. Stone Cold's prescene couldn't save the match. I vivdly remember  doing everything else other than pay attention to that match.

The Corre (remember them?) took on a makeshift team of Kane, Kofi Kingston, Santino Marella, and Big Show. For some reason Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus for the United States championship was relegated to the pre show. Trish Stratus returned to the ring to team with John Morrison and Snooki of Jersey Shore fame (which was insanely popular back then) to take on Dolph Ziggler and LayCool.

In hindsight Wrestlemania 27 was a poor card and definitely not one of Wrestlemania caliber. It honestly is the worst Wrestlemania of the past 10 years. I've attended Wrestlemania 33 and 34, which were better events, but 27 will always hold a special place in my heart despite how bad it is.
