Escape The Undertaker Review
With it being spooky season the WWE decided to partner with Netflix for a interactive special featuring The Undertaker and The New Day.
The special is basically a live action choose your own adventure story, much like the books that were pretty popular during my youth in the 90's. When I first turned it on I forgot that quick it was a choose your own adventure and that I needed to pay attention. Needless to say I missed a choice or two.
The plot itself is kind of hokey, but if your a wrestling fan it ties into the mythology of The Undertaker. The New Day visit his in the middle of nowhere manor in an effort to acquire his urn, which gives him his supernatural powers. Piggybacking off the early years of his in-ring career when the urn gave him his powers.
That's the gist of the story, the New Day stumbling through Takers house and coming across some wrestling Easter eggs in the process.
It's honestly just ok, I did enjoy the interactive component. Clocking in at 30 minutes, there are much worst ways to spend your time. The New Day with their over the top fun loving antics were good foils to the persona of the dark lord. I do wish more of the Takers mythology was included in the story, the character has one of the richest backstories in pro wrestling history.
Weird but having said that it's ok for what it is, I still recommend checking it out. It serves its purpose for the stakeholders, in that it's an opportunity for Netflix WWE to showcase technical advancements. WWE to get members of their roster with colorful personalities in front of people who may not be wrestling fans, and an opportunity to cash in on Halloween season. I did watch it a few times to see where the different options took you in the story. I'm sure even with fan criticism it will do pretty good numbers for Netflix.
Which I personally hope, will lead to a Papa Shango featured Halloween special next go round.
