Maybe Time To Retire Survivor Series

Survivor Series is tomorrow and I have absolutely no interest in it. I'll probably turn it on out of habit but honestly won't pay it much mind. This is more reflective of the current WWE product as a whole more than anything else.

Survivor Series started in 1987 as a Thanksgiving pay-per-view event with basically a survival of the fittest theme to it. Teams were comprised usually to wrestle in 5 on 5 matches, with the last man standing on the winning team gaining bragging rights of being the sole survivor.

The good thing about Survivor Series back then was for the most part there were legitimate storyline reasons for the teams that were built and pitted against one another. Today WWE takes the very lazy route and makes it a brand supremacy thing that no one cares about. Hell they showed they didn't care by announcing the teams on social media and hot potatoing the participants. Also the head scratching decision to make Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville suddenly care about one brand over the other, when they manage both brands.

This decision making also shows a lack of planning on their part. Survivor Series is one of the original big four events (Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam being the others). As such from the time Summerslam ends in August until Survivor Series in November. There should be active angles occurring that leads up to two opponents building a team to battle. Doesn't have to be main event worthy, but a solid mid-card feud would be just enough to make people care about it.

If WWE can't put that type of care into one of their legacy brands, why still hold onto it? It's obviously a shell of its original purpose and when it comes to big four now five events (Money In The Bank), it's clearly the lowest on the totem pole.

If they don't want to actually create teams that matter and make sense. Or find a way to freshen up the matches, then gracefully pull the plug on Survivor Series. Make a new event in its place and call it a day.

Until then I'll sit back and reminiscine about the good Survivor Series matches, and hope someone gets their head out of their asses and get it right.
