Put The Brand Spilt To Rest...For Good
Last Saturday was The Royal Rumble and what an utter dumpster fire it was. One of the worst Royal Rumble's in recent memory, possibly ever. Besides the reported backstage shit show that contributed to it being terrible. If previously it wasn't any more clearer, both the men's and women's rumble highlighted a major problem, the lack of depth and true stars on the roster.
Now many will say their recent quick draw of releases, have to do with their roster issues. Which is true, but as it has been noted many times the WWE's lack of effort in creating new stars has come back to bite them in the ass.
When the first brand spilt occurred 20 years ago it was due to the excess of talent from the purchase of WCW and ECW. The brand spilt worked for over a decade until they did away with it around 2011/2012, with a smaller roster being an contributing factor.
Cue up 2016, with extra talent from developmental brand NXT and the desire to ask for more money from broadcast partner Comcast. They decide to bring it back, the spilt even helped in their negotiations with FOX and the billion dollar deal they received.
Negotiations probably went like this, it's simple these handful of stars will be the face of the brand and can be used at your disposal for advertising and cross promotion. Both networks bought into it, and soon Fox pulled up the Brinks truck and USA was throwing money to air NXT against AEW.
Now the problem has become other than a select few no new stars have been created. It can be blamed on Vince and Co. for not seeing potential in talent. It can be blamed on NXT for not training correctly. It can be blamed on the machine as a whole.
The fact of the matter is this big problem along with other factors is rapidly causing fans to lose interest. They dont have the star power to spilt between both brands and carry the respective shows.
I don't forsee WWE ever going back to the bloated roster they had when AEW debuted. So the time has come for them to cut their losses and merge both rosters into one. It can't hurt most talent as they either aren't getting TV time or if they do its an afterthought.
While WWE looks to restructure and change how they operate. They should start with ending the brand spilt once and for all.
