The Missing Factor From The Attitude Era
We are now officially 25 years into the Attitude era. Wrestling fans love to talk about the attitude era, running from late '97 to end of 2001-early 2002. Why not talk about that era? It was the hottest pro wrestling has ever been. Money was being made out the wazoo.
Over the top characters were plentiful, storylines were engaging. There was Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Mr. Mcmahon and company. The Rock electrifying crowds, The Hardy's, Edge & Christian, and the Dudley's thrilling fans with their matches.
While Sable, Jacqueline, and Trish Stratus along with other divas kept horny teenage boys and some men into tailspins with their sex appeal.
For everything that was an undeniable hit, that era also had several cringeworthy material and moments. For everything great and everything cringeworthy, what the attitude era had that's missing today is a compelling mid-card.
Both shows Raw and Smackdown everything that occurred on those shows had a purpose and a story. The mid card cast held their own D'lo Brown's chest protector angle, Jeff Jarrett chauvinist crusade, Chyna kicking down doors and making history, the Holly's wanting to be super heavyweights.
It gave the mid-card meaning and made the shows all around better, supplementing the stars of the show. That's what's missing today.
There aren't many compelling mid card angles, often it seems they are just thrown together for no reason. While wrestling tries to borrow from the past to elevate wrestling's future. Make the mid card scene can't miss TV.
In fact in today's world all of the focus good or bad is placed on the main event players. While the mid card is often given angles that don't make a lot of sense. Right now in the WWE world nothing tops the Bloodline angle, and Bray's storyline but after that most of the storylines are pretty forgettable.
Lack of a compelling mid-card was one of WCW's weak points that came back to bite them in the ass. Impact and AEW suffer from it as well, just like WWE I can't think of an mid card angle from either promotion that I really sunk my teeth into and cared about this year even with Triple H taking over.
Bring back compelling mid cards where everything on the card matters, and the overall shows will improve greatly. Which will bring in the fans!
