Was Goldberg Really That Bad?
25 Years ago Goldberg became WCW's next and truthfully their last homegrown star, on the heels of short dominant matches and the streak. He had defeated Raven for the WCW United States Championship and then defeated Hollywood Hogan on a electrifying edition of Monday night Night July 6th, 1998 from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Goldbergs schitick was simple, his matches were built on squashes. Short and to the point, Goldberg's opponents may get a bit of offense but he recharged and hit a flurry of signature moves (the spear and jackhammer) for the win. His streak which ran to the end of 1998 was designed to build him as monster.
He became a legend in the process, but years later with fans looking back at his work, his WWE returns and sometimes him running his mouth. The question has came up, was Goldberg a good wrestler?
The short answer I would say is NO. Goldberg was a decent wrestler who have a look that fans bought into and enough effective moves to make his matches entertaining.
While he wasn't the best wrestler to ever step foot in the ring. I don't think he was as bad of a wrestler as history may have some believe. Limited in moveset? Sure. A car salesman that drew you into his matches with his promos? Not one bit. Took himself a bit too serious? Absolutely.
In the grand scheme of things I place him in the top 50 list of his era, simply for his undeniable star power.
