February Random Rants
January seemed to drag on, February even with the extra day breezed by. Meanwhile the weather was never sure what it wanted to be most days. As we are now 36 days away from Wrestlemania and a lot went down.
Let's touch on a few random thoughts I have for pro wrestling from February.
It's obvious Tony Khan is not comfortable talking in front of large swathes of fans. His "big announcement" segments which are now pre-taped are just as bad. Look at his Big Business announcement. He frequently repeats himself and is always nervous. It maybe time to rethink who makes these big announcements.
I like the subtle differences WWE continues to make in they're presentation. From footage of wrestlers entering the arena, to empty arena interviews. The traditional barricade instead of the LED barricades are a nice sight to see. Much like changing like a door knob at home something small gives it a different look and feel.
Rob Fee who worked closely with Bray Wyatt on his Fiend character and joined the company in 2022 as director of long term storytelling. Is now the director of Character Development. A role I belive is the first of its kind officially, but honestly very needed. Characters and gimmicks are an integral part of wrestling, I feel is for the most part still missing. I'm looking forward to seeing how things go.
When The Rock returned with his $500 sleeveless Versace shirt I immediately thought of Hollywood Rock 2.0. His promo set that expectation for me as well. After a while I started thinking, maybe just maybe The Rock knowing this is his last heel run and probably run period. Will reference all of the different eras of his act into the current incarnation.
This is a hill I'm will stand on forever. Theme songs playing during run-ins are useless, and should be reserved for certain wrestlers. One it eliminates the element of surprise. Two you don't always get the reaction you want.
When Jake Hagers theme played on the 2/21 edition of Dynamite. There were a few cheers but mostly everyone was kind of like eh.
Even with the current backstage situation in TNA. Signing Hammerstone to a deal is a major win for both parties. I'm excited to see what he does in the company. He easily slots into the world title picture to me.
The Young Bucks new heel persona is growing on me. At first I was on the fence about them acknowledging they're EVP status with the company. Then I realized we as fans accepted it with Eric Bischoff and Vince for storyline purposes. So what's the difference here?
Drew McIntyre has been on fire in his new heel role. What makes it even better is that all of his actions are justifiable in his mind.
While we're on characters I'm really enjoying a more aggressive New Day. While still entertaining they have been stale honestly since the pandemic or maybe a little before. This small switch up has breathed new life into the act. Hopefully it will lead to a slow burn heel turn for Woods and Kofi.
Elimination Chamber was a solid event. Due to events overseas just bringing a different energy, despite the time difference expect to see more PLEs held overseas. Just look at the promos ran during for Australia during the show. WWE definitely got some kickback for that. In fact I wouldn't be shocked if we saw just abour every PLE with the exception of the big four held overseas in the near future.
If my prediction is right, I could be off a little and there maybe months logistically because of closeness in dates between PLE's it may not be feasible. However I definitely see it coming more often.
I get it Ric Flair wanted to participate in Stings final segment on Dynamite. But damn those punches were horrible, at almost 80 years old. They were slow and didn't connect and Flair just looked winded after one punch.
Sting coming down the rafters one last time to save the day. Was truly a fan Boy moment and so cool to see. The last true superhero of wrestling, he deserves all his flowers he's been given.
