The Return Of Old Fans Proves A New Era Is Upon Us
Coming off an successful Two night Wrestlemania 40 and Wrestlemania weekend overall. There has been buzz in the air about the "new era" the "Paul Levesque era". You can see the changes everywhere, the new signature video, damn near every Mania match being sponsored. The New production and camera angles, more relaxed environment regarding promos and more.
With the exception of two championships at Mania the Raw Women's Championship held by Rhea Ripley and the United States Championship held by Logan Paul. Every title defended at Mania changed hands helping to signal a new era. You can sense the excitement in the air regarding WWE along with this new era.
The biggest clue to me though that fans are excited about the path forward. Is not The Rock's return, or Cody finishing the story. Or the sold out shows or top dollar deals the company has been able to secure. It is the sheer amount of fans returning to the product.
I know so many people that were wrestling fans during the attitude era, as we got older they casually watched or at least stayed in tuned from a distance with what was going on. Or outright stopped watching it and used the attitude era as a crutch that nothing could compare to it.
Those folks are now back watching the product and are heavily invested in it. I saw quite a few people I had no idea were still watching wrestling attending Wrestlemania on social media this week. Some randomly asking my opinion or predictions on matches. I saw several celebrities or well known names in other industries talk about Mania. And to AEW's credit they are a catalyst for some old fans returning as well.
It truly feels like after 20 plus years the next boom period in professional wrestling is truly upon us. Or as Cody has dubbed it the "Renaissance era". I think this period will last longer and stronger as pro wrestling becomes more integrated into pop culture.
Let's welcome back some old friends in fans who have found their way again, and enjoy this roller coaster ride.
