5 Good Things AEW Has Going Right Now
AEW's Grand Slam Australia event is later this evening, and has weathered a couple storms from having to dramatically downsize the event. Originally being booked at a stadium, to the whole scheduling snafu with Turner and NBA All-Star Weekend, which has relegated the event to pretty much a if you see it you see it event. Not to mention AEW has been catching a hell of a lot of flack by fans for the product being lackluster to falling off the rails at times.
All is not lost in AEW land, despite the Death Riders main angle dragging on too long and other complaints like storytelling, match pacing issues, and the heavy reliance on aging wrestlers. AEW actually has some good things going on right now, with that here are 5 Good Things occurring in the company.
5. Outrunners
The Outrunners have organically connected with the AEW crowd and gotten themselves over. Their 1980's throwback aesthetics just works, there's no real explanation behind it. Everything from their attire, to entrance music, moveset and even their names Truth Magnum and Turbo Floyd screams 80's. While they are more of a comedy act, they are good wrestlers and have personality. Fan's are eating it up as they should.
4. Omega & Ospreay vs Don Callis Family
Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay putting their differences aside to battle Don Callis Family has been gold. For one Kyle Fletcher has really come into his own within the past few months and he is currently one of the best heels in the business. For two DCF are finally being presented as a bunch of ass kicking monsters and I love the mob-ish vibe they have been given. Brian Cage and Lance Archer are finally being pushed properly in the company in my opinion.
The last and biggest reason it's been so good, is that everything about this angle feels personal. Don Callis turned his back on Omega and Ospreay at different times, and Fletcher has grown out of Ospreay's shadow a bit. Two frenemies teaming up to combat a common enemy when done right is one of the best storylines in wrestling, and this one has been on fire.
3. Timeless Toni Storm
The Timeless Toni Storm angle has it's fair share of folks who love and those that hate it. One thing that cannot be denied though is Toni Storm has given her all to the character and the story. The amnesia angle was absolute gold in my opinion reverting back to Toni Storm and thinking it was her first go around in AEW. While I personally felt there was some life left before going back to Timeless Toni, she has been knocking it out the park.
Cosplaying as Mariah May was the icing on the cake, and showed that Timeless Toni is also a master of mind games. Whether you hate it or love it, you have to admit when Timeless Toni is on the screen you are entertained.
2. Ricochet
1. Harley Cameron
How can you not love Harley Cameron at this point? Between her guitar singing, puppetry work, and now her rap skills she has shown she is a star in the making. She has good comedic timing as well and is neck and neck with Chelsea Green as funniest female wrestlers in the business right now. Her in ring skills have improved as well, which makes you wonder why she was on the roster for a couple years before AEW fully utilized her potential.
It may take some time but one things for sure though, AEW has a new possible cornerstone of the women's division on their hands. I am here for the journey.
